‘Animal pattern’ Arraiolos rug

Portugal, first half of the 18th century Burlap embroidered with wool Inv. 976 A particularly impressive example of the old Arraiolos production, this rug is made from burlap embroidered in tiny wool stitches with the motifs outlined in stem stitch, which is typical of older Arraiolos rugs. The rich colour scheme varies from yellow to deep blue and includes red, green and black. The rug is decorated with the so-called ‘animal pattern’, a common trend in the industry during the first half of the 18th century. This pattern features animal figures of erudite inspiration, such as birds, quadrupeds and magical beasts, combined with winding vegetation and flower vases suggesting the influence of Oriental textiles.
