Lisbon, Tomás Correia, c. 1700-1720 Gilded, cast, repoussé, chiselled silver Red Morocco leather case with gilded bronze fittings, lined with velvet Inv. 74/1-33 This set, which is in an intact condition with all the pieces protected by the original case, is similar in style to the articles produced at the Augsburg workshops and contains a range of accessories for use in personal hygiene and light meals, as the time for performing the morning toilet coincided with the first meal of the day. The first set of items in the case are dressing table accessories: a mirror, two jewellery boxes, a pin cushion, six boxes of varying sizes for cosmetics, two glass vials for perfume, a funnel, a hairbrush and a shaving brush. The second set contains the utensils needed for a light meal: a single plate and cutlery set, a bowl, two small covered cups, a beaker with a lid that could be used as a salt shaker and two footed salvers for fruit or pastries. The third set includes accessories that could be used at both dressing and dining tables: a jug and bowl for washing hands, a pair of candlesticks, a bell, and a candle snuffer and snuffer tray. The case contains a total of 33 items, most of which bear the mark of Tomás Correia, one of the most highly skilled Portuguese silversmiths in the late 17th and early 18th century.
