FRESSforma Certified Training 2020/2021
Intangible heritage, the transmission of know-how and innovation
A FRESS seeks to keep alive traditional production practices, some of which are unique in the Portuguese and European context, and to bring knowledge of materials and technical equipment together with the teaching of traditional manufacturing techniques.
Growing demand among adults in the prime of their productive lives and from young people seeking to learn the arts and crafts of woodwork, decorative painting or conservation and restoration has led the Ricardo do Espírito Santo Silva Foundation to restructure its training programme by creating the FRESSFORMA brand. In this way, the Foundation is able to offer certified and specialised training to all those seeking arts and craft know-how in the areas of cabinetmaking, decorative painting and conservation and restoration.
With a deep awareness of heritage and historical context, our pedagogical praxis also seeks to encourage the development of novel designs and technical solutions, which, although mostly through manual application and execution, add value to traditional know-how as it relates to form, decoration, manner and product. Our respect for the knowledge we pass on can be felt in the concern with which we maintain the highest standards of quality, both in the execution of replicas and in the challenge to realise new designs and projects.
All training developed by the Ricardo do Espírito Santo Silva Foundation is based on the references of the national catalogue of qualifications.
These are keywords in the arts and crafts: quality, innovation, creativity and sustainability.
Target audience
From a perspective of lifelong learning and complementarity of training, we receive candidates from various academic backgrounds who share a desire to deepen their knowledge in technical specialisations and manufacturing processes.
Historical approach
Through the Institute of Arts and Crafts, the Ricardo do Espírito Santo Silva Foundation has been a private and cooperative teaching school since definitive authorisation no.101 of 9 January 1987 allowed it to teach its own curricula and programmes in woodwork, metalwork, decorative painting, gilding and lacquering.
Later on, with Ordinance no. 482/89 of 28 June 1989, the school was authorised to offer professional level-3 woodwork, decorative painting and metalwork courses, conferring equivalence of the 12th year of schooling, and with study plans approved by Ordinance no. 1112/95 of 12 September 1995.
Over its history, the Institute has provided teaching of traditional crafts in the areas of woodwork (cabinetmaking, carving and inlays), decorative painting, and the conservation and restoration of furniture and polychrome and gilded sculpture.
In 2006/2007, in the context of Joint Order no. 453/2004 of 27 July, the Institute gained approval to include its woodwork (cabinetmaker/carver and cabinetmaker/inlayer) and decorative painting courses and curricula within the scope of National Education and Training Courses.
In 2008, the Institute saw its efforts, programmes and the specialised experience of its teachers and trainers in woodwork and decorative painting recognised by an invitation from the National Vocational Education Qualification Agency – ANQEP – to develop national qualification references in the areas of decorative painting and woodwork. These references were approved and published in the Labour and Employment Bulletin of 2009 and September 2010, respectively.
It is on the basis of these training benchmarks that the Institute’s curricular plans of study, clearly geared towards the arts and crafts, were once again developed and updated.
