The FRESS seeks to keep alive traditional production practices, some of which are unique in the Portuguese and European context, and to bring knowledge of materials and technical equipment together with the teaching of traditional manufacturing techniques.
Growing demand among adults in the prime of their productive lives and from young people seeking to learn the arts and crafts of woodwork, decorative painting or conservation and restoration has led the Ricardo do Espírito Santo Silva Foundation to restructure its training program by creating the School of Arts and Crafts brand. In this way, the Foundation can offer certified and specialized training to all those seeking arts and craft know-how in the areas of cabinetmaking and decorative painting.
With a deep awareness of heritage and historical context, our pedagogical praxis also seeks to encourage the development of novel designs and technical solutions, which, although mostly through manual application and execution, add value to traditional know-how as it relates to form, decoration, manner and product. Our respect for the knowledge we pass on can be felt in the concern with which we maintain the highest standards of quality, both in the execution of replicas and in the challenge to realize new designs and projects.
All training developed by the Ricardo do Espírito Santo Silva Foundation is based on the references of the national catalogue of qualifications.

Target audience

The Artistic Carpenter is the professional who executes and assembles wooden objects and pieces of furniture according to traditional techniques, designing and executing projects, pieces, and decorative objects in inlays and marquetry as well as carving, by creation or recreation, while respecting safety and health at work, quality, and environmental sustainability standards.
Main activities
Develop projects based on models, drawings, or other technical specifications.
Prepare the materials, tools, and utensils necessary for the execution process of the pieces.
Construct wooden objects, furniture pieces, and decorative items according to traditional techniques.
Execute decorative wood pieces, based on carpentry skills, applying carving, inlay, and marquetry techniques, as well as finishing techniques (polishing and waxing).

Decorative Painting Technician

The Decorative Painting Technician is the professional who, mastering the appropriate techniques and procedures and respecting environmental, hygiene, and safety standards, conceives, develops, and executes projects by intervening through painting in the creation of decorative environments on mural surfaces (interior or exterior walls, ceilings, and floors), sets, furniture, and various objects, using decorative techniques (ornamental moldings, material imitation), traditional techniques (fresco, gilding, natural tempera), trompe-l’oeil techniques, and others.
Main activities
Carry out projects through creation or recreation.
Perform surveys, conceptual drawing, and technical drawing, as well as color studies.
Build models.
Interpret the project and apply it to the support to be used.
Recognize and treat the surface according to the technique to be applied.
Adapt the design to the location and the appropriate scale.
Prepare the materials inherent to the techniques and the supports to be used.
Phase the execution.
